 Major Changes @ KHRO 1650!!!
« Thread Started on Jun 14, 2008, 12:32pm »

From my blog...

Okay, I am probably going to be back on the bad-boy list for this one, but since I have now heard this from more than one source, I am going to write about it.

Not sure if you have noticed David K's show has had a "farewell" tone to it lately, but I noticed. It got me curious so I did some poking and proding and have some info.

It appears that KHRO is headed for a major line-up change very soon.

IN:
Greg Freymouth, conservative personality from 6am-10am.

Moved:
Paul Strelzin, legend in local broadcasting from 10am-1pm

Out:
David K
Fernie the Attorney
Lisa D
Sito Negron

I guess they are keeping Mario Solis Marich, and it looks like Lolis may finally be out as well.
I am not sure where that leaves Hector, Gene, or Ken Hudnall.

I also hear that they may be moving over to another spot on the dial, but can't confirm exactly where but it's supposed to be a stronger signal.

This is a major change that will have major implications. Not sure if they will be good or bad, but its a huge move.

I would LOVE to hear what you all think about this. Now this might not flesh out exactly as I have it, but from what I've been able to learn, it's something pretty close to this.

(Sorry for not talking to you about this first Paul, but I imagine it's not news to you)

Good for Paul he needs his beauty rest. Greg did a good job in the early 2000's. Do you mean their getting rid of the Womans' Corner? Perish the thought.

If this is correct I think it is terrible. Wouldn't you think that a person that generates the most listeners should be on at peak times? If they are going to move Paul from the morning, he should be on from 4-8 so that we can hear him when we get out of work.

It is difficult for me to listen during the day time, Am doesn't come in at all at my job, so I only get to listen while I am getting ready for work, driving to work, lunchtime, and when I get out.

I can't say that I am disappointed that David K will be out, but why can't Greg be on in the middle of the day?

I think Paul is a morning person. I myself, not so much. But when you are 100% within local elections, someone must be concerned. Lets face it Paul has been spot on with El Paso Politics. He knew Marisa would beat Paul. He knew that Yahira Gutierrez would beat Alfredo Chavez, Hillary would beat Obama here in El Paso (but he has thrown his support to the presumptive nominee); and most recently Emma Acosta would beat Naomi Gonzales.

Call me paranoid, but if you were on the wrong side of his political choices this season, moving this voice in an attempt to silence him before elections makes the most sense when it can do the most harm. In November, during the General Election.

zkitty,
I somehow don't think that's the agenda. No matter who they put in the morning, it wouldn't change the percentage of straight ticket Demo voters or who democrats voted for in El Paso.

True, but in the Primaries when you could'nt vote straight ticket, he was spot on for the candidates. This could be very telling especially since those who "towed the line" are still on at their regular time slots.

"Straight ticket" for primaries? Ahh, aren't primaries a straight ticket period. Now, many years ago, the Mayor and council for El Paso were elected on a block ticket.

Anyway, rumor has it that Greg Fryermouth will be working for "free". Think that might have something to do with it? I remember that he also blocked calls, cut off disagreeing callers, etc. Well this only proves you get what you "don't" pay for.

This is clear institutional censorship. The version I heard, is that Greg and his conservative radio show made a deal with Entravision bringing in his own sponsors. Bet the sponsors are non other than "da big boys in town". The purpose, to make the working folks who listen on their way to work, get a more "conservative opinion", and at 10 am...when Paul is to START his show, most of us are stuck in our jobs with no access to a radio (or we get fired by the conservatives who sign our pay checks and are paying for Greg's show).

Clear and simple: Institutional censorship!! Lisa was (yawn) ok, Sito to liberal and capable of enticing the Y generation to actually listen to talk radio, and Fernie the Attorney was amusing (though I wouldn't put him on the legal team to keep my Mom out of the funny farm).

They, "Da Boys" know that taking Paul out would create an outrage. If ya'll remember, Paul was "The Voice" who took on Wardy when he lost. And within weeks, the station announced the "cancelling" of his show. Nope, we are not allowed to have our minds probed by a Democrat!

Let's call a boycott!

Aside from that, I don't understand the move to a more-conservative line up m-f. Freymouth is not an improvement, though some "independents" aka Republicans too scared to say they are Republicans (except my one friend who really is Independent) will think so.

But how do you move the most popular show to that time slot? Especially when he's a proven commodity.

And how the hell do you let go of Sito? That is one of the brightest guys I've ever met.

I think the backlash will come hot and heavy.Management may regret that decision.

They are doing this now because the conservatives are worried about two things:

1. Obama beating McCain in November.

JOE MOODY IS A BIGGER THREAT THAN THEY FIRST THOUGHT.

With Paul actively campaigning against Dee Margo, the agenda of replacing a liberal republican with a mouthpiece, is huge. Especially when Democrats need five seats to take back the majority within the Texas House of Representatives.

I had forgotten about the last time Paul "disappeared." But just like now, he was being honest and outspoken about the ongoings of the inner loop.

I don't think a boycott will work. We need to be as loud as possible on this one.

Gotta go to work. But figure that since I just joined, (after years of wanting to join the forum, and not doing it), that I better say my peace before they "cancel the forum".

This is about Joe Moody!! They know that Paul is a loud voice for Democrats, he has already publicly endorsed Obama after being a staunch Hillary supporter and he is a very strong PUBLIC VOICE!! They know that PAUL'S OPINION MATTERS!!

I can fully attest to the fact that if you stand up to certain powers that be in the town, they try to shut you down.

That's why I created a blog. They don't like what I say, they can kiss my brown ass. Period. I am unapologetic about that.

They CANNOT and WILL NOT shut this forum down. Moving Paul doesn't suddenly take away his influence or credibility. Changing the line up will not suddenly remove people's desire to talk and exchange like we do here.

In fact, I predict that the message board will be even busier because of the change. Pretty sure this guy will give us all more to write about.

But I'm with ZKitty on this one. We need to be loud on this one.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL OF YOU ELECTED OFFICIALS THAT READ BUT DON'T POST. Now is the time for you to get off the bench and use your influence. You know who you are, in fact, its probably every elected official or candidate in town. If you ride the bench and let this playout, don't bitch when you get beat because there's a Republican on during the morning drive shaping public opinion out there. Time to earn your pay guys and gals.

Where do we start? We don't have a lot of time. So who do we send petitions to? Those will be worth signing.

All the individual can do is:

1. find out who the advertisers are on day one

2. Call them and let them know you will not patronize their business and why.

3. Turn off 1650

4. call the station and tell them why you will no longer listen

BTW: The best thing to ever happen to El Paso Radio was the day Freymouth was no longer on the airwaves.

I actually used to work with greg. Off the air he was an ok guy. If he was as bad as you say on the radio then:
1) Why is he getting back on the air
2) Won't his ratings or lack there off drive away sponsors anyway?

Money is the answer. That much is clear. I am hearing from yet another source that the doors were going to be shut in mid-July.

This stinks of some Republican heavy-hitters like Paul Foster, Dee Margo, and Woody Hunt coming in to spend some money at the station to shape public opinion before a key race. This is a Moody thing.

Money is an important influencer and if KHRO were in a vulnerable position, I can see them being open to making a move like this. C'mon folks, let's test this motto of
Powered By the People!

This just means we are going to have to work that much harder to make sure that Moody beats Margo. They are scared because other than his Myspace page, they don't really have anything on him. That's what sucks for them, so they have to go after those that can point out the littany of faults that Dee Margo has.

Paul was vehemently vocal against Margo in the primary and even crossed over to vote for Haggerty. So you can imagine the damage that the straight democratic ticket, plus Paul will have in November?

I agree Phoenix, Powered by the People.
